What Is It Like to Be a Bat? is perhaps Nagel’s most famous and influential work. Since being published over 50 years ago it has continued to affect discussion within philosophy of mind.
The paper was originally recommended to me by a friend years ago, and I read it as a complete philosophical layperson. The discussion that followed made me want to understand the larger conversations and contexts surrounding the short essay. I wanted to be able to clearly describe my thoughts, understand any jargon, and engage with the branch of philosophy more deeply. Because I wanted to argue about it.
Written word that incites such a deep and enduring response is rare. I won’t summarize here, as I would want anyone who is unfamiliar to experience the text in the same way I did, but I’m very happy to be able to offer the title to new and old readers as White Beech Press’s second publication.
